Borealis String Quartet
(Vancouver)

Yuel Yawney, violin

This concert marks a very special occasion for Chamber Music Kelowna - the debut of our first commissioned work - a lovely string quartet written by the Okanagan’s eminent composer, Imant Raminsh. It is a thrill for us to have the vibrant Borealis Quartet (quartet-in-residence at UBC) performing this piece, and to have CBC Radio 2 present to record the concert. There will be a pre-concert talk by composer, Imant Raminsh begining at 7p.m.

"(The Borealis are) together four of the biggest young talents in Canadian music." - The Vancouver Sun

Osiris Trio
(Amsterdam)

Ellen Corver, piano
Peter Brunt, violin
Larissa Groeneveld, cello

"It was by his gentleness alone that Osiris subjected country after country, winning and disarming their inhabitants by songs and the playing of musical instruments...” Three brilliant musicians from Amsterdam who have taken on the name of this Egyptian god of the underworld captivate us with spellbinding artistry of their own.

“Extending right through the concert was the encouraging zest of the performers: their largeness in every musical dimension of color, dynamic range and expression, and their consistently well balanced togetherness as an ensemble.” - New York Times

Crow-Laimon-Marleyn Trio
(Montreal & Ottawa)

Jonathan Crow, violin
Sara Laimon, piano

Violinist Jonathan Crow has enjoyed astonishing success - at only twenty-seven he is currently Concertmaster and youngest member of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He makes his debut with Chamber Music Kelowna teamed with two of our favourites, Paul Marleyn, Professor of Cello at the University of Ottawa , and pianist Sara Laimon, Chair of the Piano Area at McGill University in Montreal .

"Paul Marleyn's playing is emotionally intense, physically big-boned, and never dull." - Gramophone Magazine

"(Sara Laimon is) a commanding and confident player with a strong technique and an ability to find the drama and wit in works that often had daunting surfaces." - The New York Times

"The score is almost frenzied at times and demands great control. Crow mastered the tension that is central to the piece with characteristic brilliance." - The Globe and Mail

Mary Irwin Theatre, Rotary Centre for the Arts
The Lafayette String Quartet
(Victoria)

Ann Elliott-Goldschmid, violin
Sharon Stanis, violin
Joanna Hood, viola
Pamela Highbaugh Aloni, cello

We are delighted to welcome back four remarkable women, esteemed individually as musicians and teachers ("Artists in Residence" at the University of Victoria since 1991) and collectively as one of the finest string quartets in the world. Formed in Detroit in 1984, the LSQ was soon winning major international competitions and playing to critical acclaim throughout Europe and North America . In 1999 the quartet performed their first complete Beethoven cycle (16 quartets in 6 concerts) and their formidable interpretation of the great master is a fitting conclusion to our season.

"In their convincing interpretation, Beethoven's mighty monster (Op.131) sang as sweetly as it thundered ..." - Los Angeles Times
