“A rare gift for combining interpretive spontaneity and fierce musical commitment.”-New York Times The St. Lawrence String Quartet was formed in 1989, and now celebrates its 30th Anniversary. This ensemble quickly claimed top awards at chamber music competitions, including being the first Canadian quartet to win the Banff International String Quartet Competition. Winner of a JUNO Award, Opus Magazine Prize, German Record Critics Award and two Grammy nominations, SLSQ is in high demand, touring extensively, performing over one hundred concerts per season. This quartet has produced ground-breaking studies and recordings of the Haydn String Quartets. According to the New Yorker, “ other North American quartet plays the music of Haydn with more intelligence, expressivity, and force…” Critics describe the St. Lawrence String Quartet as dramatic, superb, and wickedly attentive, with a hint of rock ‘n roll!
From their roots as ensemble-in-residence at Stanford University, the St. Lawrence String Quartet oversees the chamber music program and is fiercely committed to education and collaborating with
living composers to perform their works. The Quartet performs regularly at Stanford Live, hosts an annual chamber music seminar, and runs the Emerging String Quartet Program through which it mentors the next generation of young quartets. Recent concert highlights include performances with pianist Inon Barnaton, the Baltimore Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
